A Fatwa is a scholarly review of a defined Sharia question. Apply for a published tier, or start with the £50 Consultation Initial Assessment if you would like the Council to advise on the suitable route first.

Consultation or formal Fatwa? A consultation is an advisory discussion. It does not automatically become a Fatwa. If you only need to discuss your circumstances or general Sharia guidance first, start with the £50 Consultation Initial Assessment. A Fatwa is either an application for a published tier, or follows the Consultation Initial Assessment where the Council recommends a tier.
Consultation Initial Assessment — £50. A paid, confidential first consultation for any initial matter: Khulu’, Faskh, marital advice or general questions. The Council reviews your circumstances and advises on the suitable next step. Where your question needs formal scholarly review, it may recommend a published Fatwa tier. The assessment is a separate professional service and is not itself a Fatwa.
Consultation Initial Assessment — £50
Start with the £50 Consultation Initial Assessment for any initial consultancy, including Khulu’, Faskh, marital advice or general questions. The Council reviews your question, circumstances and any supporting information, then advises on the suitable next step. Where your question needs formal scholarly review, it may recommend a published Fatwa tier; you can also apply for a published tier directly. The assessment is not itself a Fatwa.
The £50 Consultation Initial Assessment is a separate professional service and is not deducted from any later fee, including a Fatwa tier fee.

Tiers increase with complexity, evidence, research, scholarly consideration, urgency and the number of issues involved. Delivery periods begin after the required information and the relevant Fatwa fee have been received. A timeframe may be adjusted where further evidence, specialist input or clarification is required. Genuinely exceptional matters may still be quoted separately; the standard system recognises all five Fatwa tiers above.
How to Begin
- Send a brief enquiry identifying the subject.
- The team confirms the suitable application route and information required.
- Submit the completed application. Supporting material is optional: upload it with the application or email it to salam@theislamicshariacouncil.org.uk quoting your application reference.
- The question is reviewed and referred to the appropriate scholar or panel.
- The response is issued privately.
How a Fatwa proceeds
- Choose how to begin. Apply for a published tier, or submit the £50 Consultation Initial Assessment if you want the Council to assign the tier.
- Council Assessment. The Council considers the question, circumstances and evidence. Substantive scholarly work does not begin at this stage.
- Fatwa tier assigned. Possible standard tiers: £150 / £350 / £700 / £1,000 / £1,300.
- You decide whether to proceed. Pay the assigned Fatwa fee. The £50 assessment is not deducted from that fee.
- Substantive scholarly review. Fatwa work begins only after the relevant Fatwa fee has been paid.
- Fatwa outcome / issuance. Subject to the Council accepting the matter and receiving the information required.
